Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
