When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
