Venus Williams, Receives Wild Card for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had earlier stated in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.
Setting a Fresh Benchmark
Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
Latest Personal Milestone
In the final days of December, Williams married Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
