While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
