The Story of Leonard and Hungry Paul Analysis: A Gentle Series Narrated by the Famous Actress Provides an Ideal Antidote to Modern Life

In a calm neighborhood of the Irish capital, a person stands in his driveway, wearing a vest and expressing his feelings. “I notice I'm becoming more silent. Harder to see,” remarks the protagonist, gazing into the darkness. “One thing’s led to another and now I believe unless I take action, my life will proceed in this quiet, unremarkable life.” His friend Paul, Leonard’s best and only friend, ponders this statement. “There's no harm in that,” he answers, his dressing gown moving in the breeze. “Superior to striving for recognition only to wind up defacing it.”

For viewers tired by the noise and constant stimulation of current streaming terrain, this series arrives similar to a warm cover and a comforting beverage of Ribena.

Similar to its gentle leads, Leonard and Hungry Paul – a six-episode program developed by its authors, adapted from the author’s subtle book – looks disapprovingly toward today's world; looking skeptically over its spectacles at anything in the way of disturbances, quick actions or – perish the thought – excessive aspiration. The series rather, a tribute to quiet people; a subtle homage of those content to amble along out of the spotlight. However. Leonard (a further uniquely quirky performance by the actor) is unsettled. He notices an increasing “urge to throw open the doors and windows within my world … just a bit.” The loss of his mother has whisked the rug out from under him and Leonard, a ghost writer, now finds himself reconsidering the decisions that have brought him to where he is (unattached; with a protective mustache; writing a range of children’s encyclopedias for a boss who ends correspondence with the phrase “goodbye for now”).

And so Leonard launches an exploration for emotional fulfilment, accompanied by the somewhat braver Hungry Paul (the actor) acting as his confidante, guide and co-conspirator in a weekly game night which acts as debate (“Is the water heated due to children urinating, or do kids pee in it as it's heated?”) and safe space.

(How did Paul get his nickname? The reason is unknown. The beginning of the moniker is shrouded in history. Maybe the postal worker once ate some food very fast, or reacted to a socially fraught incident by hastily opening four scotch eggs by biting into them).

Into Leonard’s gentle world cartwheels Shelley (the performer), a fresh energetic associate who cheerily offers to kill Leonard’s appalling boss (the character) at a fire practice. The swift movement audible is Leonard’s gentle world being turned upside down.

In another part in the initial show of a series driven less by plot and centered around what a modern audience may refer to as “mood”, we meet Paul's father (the ever-wonderful the performer), a worn-out individual who privately views, saves and reviews television game programs to amaze his adoring wife through his fact recall.

Shepherding the audience through all this subtle warmth there is a voiceover who closely resembles – and, indeed, very much is – the famous actress. Yes, the star. In case you're considering, “certainly the use of such a famous actor is at odds with the show's modest approach and starts off as just an interruption?” that's accurate. Nevertheless, Roberts does a good job, and phrases for example “Leonard’s problem is his absence of an expression of discovery” help ensure that initial doubts fade if not quite to appreciation, then at least acceptance.

Enough complaining for now. The series' spirit is well-intentioned: which is “sitting on a park bench alongside similar shows, showing its favourite duck.” The program that moves gently in its sleeveless jumper, at times staring toward the sky, sometimes downward at its slippers, calmly assured that nothing is on Earth as heartening as being alongside dear pals.
