The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."
He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
