The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
