Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
