A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who are known to date.
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
