Liverpool's Manager Provides Zero Justifications and Vows to Find Route Out of Slump

Liverpool's head coach stated he needed to “examine my own performance” after the Reds suffered a sixth defeat in 7 English top-flight games on their own turf against Nottingham Forest and insisted he would find a solution out of the champions’ slump.

Forest, fighting against the drop before kick off, produced the largest win at Liverpool's stadium in their history as Liverpool slipped to an 8th defeat in 11 fixtures in all competitions. The most expensive domestic acquisition, the Swedish striker, was once more unnoticeable and Liverpool argued Murillo’s first goal should have been disallowed for comparable grounds to Virgil van Dijk’s chalked-off goal versus Manchester City before the national team pause. But the manager admitted the buck rested with him and made no excuses.

“Nobody wants to hear me now talking about refereeing decisions if you are defeated 3-0 in your own stadium to Forest,” said the Liverpool head coach. “I ought to look at myself first and my team, but it demonstrates you how a score can alter the momentum of a match. Earlier I was just hoping for us to net a goal. Later we hardly generated any chances.

“Naturally there is a path forward, particularly with the talented footballers we have. Regardless if you triumph or lose when you look back you are always thinking: ‘In which areas can we improve, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is different from questioning yourself.

“I want to emphasise I am accountable for the current defeats. You are responsible when you are victorious but also responsible when you are defeated. I can never come up with sufficient excuses for us to have the outcomes we have. That is not good enough and I am responsible for that.”

The team's display unravelled as the coach made several offensive changes when chasing the game. “It was the same away at Nottingham Forest the previous campaign,” he said. “I took the French defender off and put on the Portuguese forward and he found the net straight away to equalize at 1-1. At that time it was brave, now it’s probably unwise.”

The Anfield side last lost two successive at Anfield league fixtures by Nottingham Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they suffered back-to-back league matches by a 3-0 margin was in the mid-60s.

The manager said: “It was very bad. Playing at home, conceding 3-0 regardless of which team you face is a terrible result. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the game. I haven’t seen us producing so many chances in the initial 30 minutes maybe the whole campaign, and the first time they arrived in our penalty area they found the back of the net.

“It did not happen at City, but in every other fixture we have been the dominant side and were capable to generate opportunities. Lately it is nearly constantly that we fail to convert our opportunities and the ones we concede find the net.”
