James understood his incredible streak of scoring in double figures was threatened. When it mattered most, however, it didn't concern him.
The correct basketball play was to pass the rock – so he did. Following that play, the unprecedented record was over.
LeBron's unprecedented streak of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season double-digit scoring performances concluded during a recent game, when basketball's greatest scorer finished with a mere eight points during the Lakers' close win against the Toronto Raptors. He made the clutch helper, finding teammate Rui Hachimura to hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
“Zero,” James stated in response on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
James could have tried to secure the game – and preserved the streak – in the closing seconds, instead, he decided to dish the ball to Rui in the left corner. Hachimura made the shot, and James raised his arms immediately.
You have to play basketball the right way. Make the correct play,” James noted. “That’s just been how I operate. That is the way I learned to play. I've played that way throughout my career.”
James is acutely aware of how many points he has at any point,” stated Lakers coach the coach. He acted just as he has countless times.”
LeBron checked back into the floor one last time with under five and a half minutes to go, the win and his personal record on the line. His tally was only six points from 3-of-15 shooting then.
He got a bucket with under two minutes remaining to level the contest but then missed a shot with one minute to go which could have pushed him to double digits.
He passed up another shot – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves passed him the ball as time wound down, yet LeBron opted to dish it off instead of shooting.
“The basketball gods, if you do it the right way, they will bless you,” Redick added.
James's streak started back in January 2007. It stood as the most extended double-digit streak the league has ever seen: His Airness, Michael Jordan had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787, and The Mailman was fourth on the list with 575.
LeBron is such a pass-first superstar,” noted teammate Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays the sport. He had the opportunity but due to who he is on the court and his character as an individual, he made the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and secured the game.”
Scoring in double figures had long been a formality early in the fourth quarter began. Over the course of the record, he had reached ten points by the beginning of the final quarter 1,266 times prior to Thursday.
Yet two of those unusual games below ten points through three quarters had happened just days before: He had nine points going into the fourth versus the Mavericks last week, and then had six points before the fourth quarter versus the Suns earlier in the week.
LeBron was able to extend the streak in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it concluded – and he celebrated all the same.
My focus is to make the correct play. That’s automatic, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. When you make the right play, the basketball gods are always rewarding me.”
