Ethiopia Takes Back Valuable Artefacts Following a 100-Year Stay in a German Family
Around Twelve ancient artefacts have been officially returned to the Ethiopian nation after remaining by a family in Germany for in excess of ten decades.
The treasures, originally collected in the 1920's by Germany's representative to Ethiopia a German envoy and his wife Hedwig, were delivered on Wednesday to the research center at the university in Addis Ababa.
This collection contained royal crowns, armor and paintings, all considered as culturally valuable in the country.
"These artefacts continue to serve as a emblem of the enduring and friendly connection between Germany and Ethiopia," remarked the German diplomat, the envoy to the East African country.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose father was delivered during the family's diplomatic posting in Ethiopia, presented the artefacts at a event joined by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He said that the household's intention to return the artefacts was to "showcase their splendor with the audience and safeguard the heritage and past tied to my parent's beginning."
The objects were either gifts or purchases, as stated by the relatives.
"I want to express gratitude to the Weiss relatives for actively expressing their profound love for Ethiopia by meticulously maintaining these artifacts and vitally guaranteeing their homecoming to their legitimate country," commented the tourism minister.
The minister noted that the artefacts would soon be made accessible to the general audience for investigation and scholarly work, terming the move a milestone in safeguarding the nation's national treasures.
"Efforts persist to bring back historical artifacts that are held in the possession of collectors and entities throughout the globe," the minister stated.
In the era of colonialism in Africa, many of cultural items were taken.
This request by nations in Africa for the restoration of looted items has been answered with some success in the past few years - though some items are merely on temporary return.
Back in the year 2022, Germany was the first nation to repatriate a portion of the famous historical items to the Nigerian people as part of an effort to deal with its "complex legacy."
