Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The clip, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and defend this national charter," the lawmakers stated in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you should reject improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that violate the law or our constitution."
The clip reportedly trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats released a combined announcement censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our United States with exceptional loyalty and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical online messages and recant his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the statement stated.
The officials who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the law," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they execute their vow to the founding principles and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the former president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the official declared. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to organize a recorded statement to members of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The sanctity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
