The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was aboard the New Shepard NS-31 rocket in Spring 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in various fields.

The enterprise behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
