Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
