Australian Teen Charged for Supposedly Placing Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Sculpture

Authorities mentioned they were unable to take off the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly defacing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in South Australia on Tuesday, charged with a single charge of damaging property.

Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the local council said that CCTV footage captured a person placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and told the court she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the magistrate advising her to find a lawyer before her next court date in the final month of the year.

Art piece after eye removal
The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader stated that repairs to the popular public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

The mayor added the council would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.

At the time the artwork was initially suggested, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its price tag and appearance.

Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork depicts a legendary giant animal, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.

Formal name vs. nickname
Cast in Blue is its formal title but locals nicknamed the artwork the ‘Blue Blob’.
