A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
