Are You Able to Solve It? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary Globe
There are many contenders to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to a mechanised sawmill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 lumberjacks working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”
