The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
